Duhamel Watershed Wildfire Resilience Initiative (WRI)

The Duhamel Watershed Society (DWS), with support from the Columbia Basin Trust and the Province of BC, is launching a two-year initiative to mitigate wildfire threats and enhance neighbourhood protection in the Six Mile communities.

What We Are Doing:

  • Forest Fuel Management: Guided by a Registered Professional Forester, we are establishing demonstration sites to reduce fire intensity, prevent crowning, and create safe spaces for rescue crews, while protecting old-growth, fire-resistant trees and improving overall forest health.

  • Water Availability Mapping: In partnership with Living Lakes Canada, we are mapping existing neighborhood water sources. This crucial data will be given directly to Fire Protection professionals to speed up emergency response and will help us plan future water infrastructure improvements.

  • Community Education: We are actively working to build resilience through community-oriented capacity-building activities and support for the seven FireSmart disciplines.

How to Get Involved:

  • Participate in volunteer water data collection.

  • Attend our upcoming virtual meetings and worksite tours.

  • Sign up for an individual RDCK FireSmart property visit.
