Water Availability Mapping

Let’s Work Together

Water Availability Mapping

WHAT is Water Availability Mapping?
As part of the Wildfire Resilience Initiative, Duhamel Watershed Society is working with Living Lakes Canada to assess the number, location, and capacity of water resources in the Six Mile communities.

Knowing where water resources are and how much they can supply helps fire response planning and informs community wildfire prevention strategies, like fuel management.

WHY is Water Availability Mapping important?

  • Reduces firefighting response time: Gives wildfire crews the information they need to make the best operational decisions.

  • Protects communities: Shows where water supply could be improved to assist firefighting .

  • Strengthens collaboration: Community members can get involved by helping measure and report water supply capacity. There are lots of ways to contribute!

HOW does Water Availability Mapping work?

Living Lakes Canada and DWS work with residents to collect data on water flow rates, location, and site access. Maps are then produced by Living Lakes Canada, using software and formats that make them compatible with applications used by emergency response organizations, like the BC Wildfire Service. Using this approach helped save homes in Argenta during the 2024 wildfire there.
